The Food Groups - Six
Broadly speaking, healthy meals usually produce healthy bodies. That is, healthy organs, energetic bodies and
the lack of excess body weight, just to name a few.
In this day of age, practically everywhere we turn there is an ad or an article that is stressing how we can lose
weight and how to keep it off. While having the "right" body weight is tremendously important, the focus on our
weight has pushed aside the simple fact of just eating healthy to be healthy.
Foods are divided into groups and depending on which part of the world we are living in, we may be told that
there are five (5) or six (6) food groups. However, those of us who are taught that there are five food groups are
not lacking one and those who are taught that there are six, do not have an extra one. You see, in some societies
Vegetables and Fruits are treated as one food group, whereas in other societies Vegetables and Fruits are counted
as two food groups and so on. Here however we will be looking at the six food groups.
(1) Staples -which makes up about 45.0%
(2) Vegetables - which makes up about 15.0%
(3) Fruits - which makes up about 10.0%
(4) Legumes & Nuts - which makes up about 18.0%
(5) Foods from Animals & Seafood - which makes up about 7.0%
(6) Fats, Oils & Sweets - which makes up about 5.0 %
